Contractors warned against using 'Schemes'
A large percentage of employment services companies offering to set up Personal Services Companies or put you in a special scheme are wide open to attack by the Revenue under the new guidelines. Clients are usually dealt with by call centre operators, not qualified accountants. They will manage hundreds of limited companies and have no idea about their clients or their client's specific needs. You will also be lucky to speak to the same person twice.
If they don't have Accountancy in their name they probably aren't Accountants
To help identify the tax advisers and accountants to use, contractors should ask potential service providers the following questions before signing up:
- What are their accounting qualifications?
- Are they experienced in providing services to contractors and freelancers?
- Where are they based?
- Who will be your accountant and can you meet them?
- Is there a minimum period you need to sign up for?
- Are there penalties if you leave early, and if so, why? This is specifically disallowed under all Accountancy bodies ethical rules.
