What are your alternatives to the Flat Rate Scheme?

In the 2016 autumn statement, a major change to the Flat Rate VAT Scheme was announced – which came into effect on April 6th 2017. It’s quite a big change, and means that many people who previously used this scheme to their advantage, are now finding that it is far less beneficial. Contractors and other self-employed people are happier than employees

According to the findings of a new survey, 48% of permanentemployees are often not happy at work, and almost 20% are ‘rarely or never’ happy at work. Meanwhile, a huge 76% of self-employed people stated that they were enthusiastic about the work they do – making it clear that contractors, freelancer and other self-employed people are happier with their career choices than employees.


What’s so good about working for yourself? New report has the answers!

We were interested to read some new survey results from Newcastle-based property letting agent CityBreaks – which focused on what people love about working for themselves. Of course, we know from talking to our own clients what makes them choose to set up their own limited companies, but it’s great to find out more about what motivates others to do the same.


Two thirds of European employees are thinking of becoming self-employed

We weren’t surprised to read that new research from Human Capital Management solutions firm ADP has found that 68% of Europeans are considering setting up their own businesses. In the UK alone, that figure is 63%, making it clear that traditional employment is no longer the ‘norm’ for a wide range of people.


London is ‘the place to be’ for freelancers and the self employed

A new report has been published by the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed (IPSE), which shows that the number of freelancers operating within Greater London has grown significantly over the last nine years. Up by 59% in fact! In total, there are now more than two million people in the UK who are self-employed or working for themselves in some way – and 21% of those are based in the nation’s capital.


CV-Library data shows positive economic outlook for the UK

The latest economic data from job site CV-Library is certainly positive for limited company contractors, despite the ongoing uncertainly around Brexit. Job opportunities and pay rates have increased across the UK, over the last 12 months, showing overall growth of 7.6% in new roles becoming available.


Contracting could be the way to go for the over 50s

Over the last few Contractor Attitude Surveys that we have carried out, we’ve noticed an increasing number of older limited company contractors. Over 30% of the UK’s working population is now over 50 – which is some 9.4 million of us, in real terms.

Newly published research from specialist lender and savings bank Aldermore has supported last week’s findings from the Scottish Widows Centre for the Modern Family survey – both pieces of research confirming that UK workers are huge fans of the contracting lifestyle, or are seriously considering taking the plunge.

New figures published in mid-January indicate a significant increase in job searching activity across the board, with a 55% rise in people looking for a new role in 2017, when compared to December 2016.
