Consumers encouraged to switch energy supplier

UK householders are being advised to revisit their gas and electricity bills, following the launch of the Government's 'Energy Smart' campaign.

The campaign, which is being run by Energywatch and Ofgem, highlights the fact that gas and electricity bills have risen significantly over the last year.

According to Government figures, householders who have not switched suppliers are spending 22% more on their energy supplies than those who have.

Patricia Hewitt, trade and industry secretary, said, 'Half of all households have never switched energy supplier, despite the fact that there are big savings still to be made. Our message today is simple – why pay more for your gas and electricity than you need to?'

The Government is also recommending that householders take steps to improve their energy efficiency, such as fitting cavity wall insulation.

Further advice is available on the Energywatch website.
