A recent poll conducted by freelancer support website OfficeCavalry.com announced that Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson is the number one British business figure most looked up to.
Topping the 5,000 contractor poll, ahead of Lord Alan Sugar of Amstrad of The Apprentice fame, and X-Factor guru Simon Cowell. Leading business figures Sir Terry Leahy, Dame Anita Roddick, Sir Stuart Rose and Sir Philip Green came next in the poll, ahead of James Dyson, Bernie Ecclestone and Peter Jones. Andy Turner, co-founder of OfficeCavalry.com, said Brits are “clearly inspired” by the true vision of these business figures, many of whom started from humble beginnings.
“Determination and ambition to become your own boss clearly plays a part and it’s encouraging to see that an increasing number of Brit’s are opting for a freelance lifestyle,” he commented. Mr Turner noted that there are currently 1.4 million contractors in the UK, up 14 per cent on the total number working in this way in 1998.
