The UK’s sixth annual National Freelancers Day will be taking place on Wednesday 19th November 2014. The event is a celebration of the increasing popularity of freelancing, which has grown by a staggering 54.4% since 1990, with 4.6 million people in the UK working for themselves.
The 2014 annual event has been hailed by organisers from The Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed (IPSE) as a celebration that “The Future is Here”. With the number of freelancers in the UK ever increasing, National Freelancers Day celebrates this upward trend as well as the courage and dedication that freelancers possess.
Event organisers IPSE have laid on events in London, Edinburgh and Manchester. The main event takes place in London’s Old Street and the action will be screened via a live feed to the two other locations to give all attendees the chance to ask questions and network.
At the headline event a panel of experts will be discussing the issues that affect freelancers today and the ways that we can ensure a positive future. On the panel this year are MPs Nick Boles and Toby Perkins, Emma Jones co-founder of Startup Britain, a national campaign to support small enterprises, Journalist Declan Curry and Radio Presenter Nick Ferrari. The debate will be hosted by Broadcaster Sue Lawley, who has been asked to perform this role for the sixth year running.
The panel will address a range of topics such as how we can secure the UK’s future as the world’s most advanced innovation-driven economy, the ways we can ensure that self-employment is put on the political agenda, and how we can support and encourage the growing number of women and young people who are becoming freelancers.
As well as having some MPs on the panel National Freelancers Day has been backed by Government Ambassador for Woman and Enterprise, Lorely Burt, who said that with more and more people choosing to work for themselves we should celebrate their brave decision and National Freelancers Day provides a perfect opportunity to do this.
