With the elections still a running subject, the PCG have revealed findings from its recent poll concerning contractors opinions on their local councillors.
According to the PCG’s findings, improvements to infrastructure is top of the list with regards to what they would like to see their local councillors improve on in their area.
The Professional Contractor Group asked their members what they would like their councillors to do for the self-employed workforce in the local area, should they get elected.
The improvement of communications infrastructure, such as broadband was the most popular, with 30% saying this would be most important to them.
PCG member, James Collings, from Buckinghamshire said, “Local councillors are likely to think most about those who live AND work in the constituency. Transport for commuting within the region will therefore be a higher priority than transport links that take people out of the locality and off to the cities. If the move towards remote working continues, then local infrastructure such as workhubs in council buildings and broadband will become more important for residents and therefore more important for the councillors.”
Of those surveyed, 26% would also like to see councillors act to ensure local public services used more contractors. PCG member Rajiv Dhir, based in Glasgow, commented, “More work needs done at a national level over public sector contracts being broken down into smaller parcels for easier access for freelancers.”
George Anastasi, PCG’s Policy Development Co-ordinator, added, “All of the actions recommended in the poll would bring real benefits to small business on a local level. Local government can play a big part in helping these businesses contribute to economic growth.
It is therefore crucial that local councillors across the country understand the needs of the self-employed working in their constituencies and act to create an environment which helps them to flourish.”
