How to Interview for a Contractor Role

As a contractor, you a more than likely to attend a lot more interviews than you would if you were going for a permanent job role, which means you do need to be on top of your interview technique to ensure that you land the contract.

Interview Preparation

If a company or agency has informed you that you have an interview for a contracted role there are a few things which must first be checked and potentially updated.

Research The Company

Probably one of the most important elements of an interview regardless if it’s a contract or a permanent position is, to learn about the company you are interviewing for. You will need to understand how they operate, what’s their industry, what industry are they targeting, understand their customer and most importantly; understand what the position entails.

All of this research needs to be done prior to the interview, and may just win you some brownie points with the interviewer for doing that little bit of extra research.

Location and Travel

If the interview is being held on site rather than via a phone call or video conference then you need to make sure you know where the interview is being held, is there available parking if you are driving?

Alternatively, if you plan to use public transport, you need to check and double check the times or departure and arrival. Most importantly ensure that you arrive with enough time to collect yourself and prepare beforehand.

Video / Phone Interview

If, however your interview is being held via video or phone then there are a few things you need to ensure beforehand. Having the right equipment is a must for example, having a working stable internet connection, a computer and a webcam for video conferencing.

Ensuring that you are in a quiet environment where you can concentrate and not be disturbed, and that you have all the other necessary materials to hand. Such as, your CV, a pen and notepad and perhaps a list of questions you’d like to ask the interviewer. 

The Interview

There are some things that you need to make yourself aware of when in the interview itself. You will need to be able to sell yourself as a highly skilled professional within your chosen industry. To do so, ensuring that you know the specific need that the interviewer is looking for to fill a knowledge gap, and demonstrate that you have the relevant experience and expertise for this.

After the Interview

Prepare for the worst which is, you don’t get the contract – but while you wait, keep searching for other available positions, and keep in touch with your agency for any updates. Although if the contract is offered to you, then the negotiation process can begin, which usually happens through the agency on your behalf.
