Shadow Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Catherine McKinnell MP, and Chair of Labour’s Policy Review, Jon Cruddas MP, have acknowledged the importance of contractors and the role that they play in the UK economy, in a roundtable organised by the Professional Contractors Group (PCG).
The seminar, set up by the PCG and the Fabian Society at the House of Commons, had representatives from other trade associations discussing the ways in which the Labour Party can reach out to freelancers, and to examine the latest research into the sector commissioned by PCG.
The panel included Professor Andrew Burke of Cranfield University and author of PCG’s latest research on the freelance sector; Jon Cruddas MP, Chair of Labour’s Policy Review; Catherine McKinnell MP, Shadow Economic Secretary and Erika Watson, editor of Prowess 2.0- an online portal for female entrepreneurs.
Professor Andrew Burke’s research, which was a big focus of discussion, has shown that independent professionals do in fact drive growth in sales and jobs in the firms that use them, and are therefore a vital part of the economic landscape.
Simon McVicker, Director of Policy and Public Affairs at PCG, said, “The event was a great success and it shows that the Labour Party are beginning to recognise the importance of freelancers in the UK economy and understand this unique way of working. Senior figures from the party attended the event and we will of course look to ensure that words are translated into action and the positive work continues.
“PCG look forward to working with the members of the panel in the future to ensure freelancers’ voices are heard when it comes to creating new Labour economic policies.”
