A new research study conducted by IT industry analyst Gartner has pointed to a significant increase in IT spending during 2010 – a development which should certainly create opportunities for IT contractors.

Gartner’s research indicates that global investment levels will increase by 5.3% over the course of the year, and that £2.2 trillion will be invested in hardware, software, IT services and telecoms over the next 12 months. Richard Gordon, research vice-president at Gartner, commented: “Following strong fourth quarter sales, an unseasonably robust hardware supply chain in the first quarter of 2010, combined with continued improvement in the global economy, sets up 2010 for solid IT spending growth.”

Earlier this month, Patrick O’Brien, senior analyst at IT consultancy Ovum, claimed that an increase in IT outsourcing is likely to be seen this year. He suggested that business confidence is returning after a long recession, encouraging more firms to seek IT upgrades from third-party providers.
